Add a newsletter signup with Substack

Add a Newsletter block to your Frddy page and every signup goes straight into your Substack list. Substack then emails the reader to confirm.

This one takes about a minute. Substack needs no API key — just your publication address.

What you'll need

  • A Frddy page you can edit.
  • A Substack publication. If you don't have one, start it at substack.com.
  • Your publication address — either yourname.substack.com or your custom domain.

Find your Substack publication address

  1. Open your publication at substack.com/dashboard.
  2. Click View publication and look at the address bar.
  3. Copy the domain only — for example yourname.substack.com or news.yoursite.com. Leave off https:// and anything after the domain.

Using a custom domain on Substack? Either the custom domain or the original .substack.com address works — pick the one your readers see.

Add the Newsletter block in Frddy

  1. Open your page in the Frddy editor.
  2. Add a Newsletter block.
  3. Choose Substack as the provider.
  4. Paste your publication address into the field.
  5. Click Test connection. A green confirmation means Frddy can reach your publication.

Write the copy and style it

  1. Set a heading (for example "Stay in the loop") and a short subtitle ("Occasional notes, no noise.").
  2. Customise the button label and the thank-you message readers see after subscribing.
  3. Pick a colour preset — Ink, Paper, Clay or Ocean — or set the card, text, background and button colours yourself.
  4. Save and publish your page.

Test a real signup

  1. Open your live Frddy page and enter your own email in the newsletter block.
  2. Check your inbox — Substack sends a confirmation email.
  3. Confirm, then look under Subscribers in your Substack dashboard.

Note: Substack always confirms by email, so a subscriber only appears as active after they click the link. That's Substack's behaviour, not a Frddy setting.

Troubleshooting

Test connection fails.
  • Make sure you entered the domain only — no https://, no trailing slash, no /subscribe.
  • Check for typos and stray spaces.
  • Confirm the publication is live and publicly reachable in a browser.
The subscriber isn't in Substack.
They probably haven't confirmed yet. Substack emails every new signup a confirmation link and only adds them once it's clicked — check the spam folder too.
Should I use Substack or beehiiv?
Whichever hosts your newsletter. Substack is the quickest to connect (no keys), while beehiiv needs a publication ID and API key — see the beehiiv guide.
